Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Melt one stick (1/2 cup) of unsalted butter and pour it directly into the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish, ensuring it coats the entire bottom evenly.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Whisk to thoroughly combine.
  3. In a separate smaller bowl, whisk together the whole milk and vanilla extract.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix with a wooden spoon or sturdy spatula until just combined. The dough will be shaggy, sticky, and soft.
  5. Transfer the dough into the prepared baking dish on top of the melted butter, and gently pat it out to fill the pan without pressing too hard.
  6. Use a sharp knife or bench scraper to cut the dough into 12-15 squares, cutting through the dough but not all the way through the melted butter.
  7. In a small bowl, mix together the remaining granulated sugar and ground cinnamon until well combined.
  8. Liberally sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture over the top of the biscuit dough.
  9. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top.
  10. Once baked, remove the pan from the oven and let the biscuits cool in the pan for about 5-10 minutes before serving warm.

Keywords: Avoid overmixing the dough to ensure tender biscuits. You can adjust the amount of cinnamon sugar topping to your liking, and consider serving with whipped cream or a drizzle of honey for added indulgence.
