Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large Granny Smith apples or Honeycrisp apples
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon milk or water
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for panko)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for panko)
  • Neutral frying oil (like canola, vegetable, grapeseed, or sunflower oil)
  • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt (plain, full-fat or low-fat) or softened cream cheese or sour cream
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of ground cinnamon (optional for dip)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: First, gently wash your chosen apples. Peel them using a vegetable peeler. Then, carefully core the apples. Once cored, slice each apple into 'fries' – aim for pieces about 1/2-inch thick and 3-4 inches long.
  2. Set Up Your Dredging Station: Grab three shallow dishes. In the first dish, whisk together 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and a tiny pinch of salt. In the second dish, crack 2 large eggs and whisk them well with a splash of milk (about 1 tablespoon) or water until thoroughly combined. In the third dish, spread out 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs and stir in 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon and 1 tablespoon granulated sugar.
  3. Coat the Apple Fries: Working in small batches (3-4 fries at a time), dredge an apple slice in the flour mixture, dip it into the egg wash, and then coat it in the seasoned panko breadcrumbs. Place the coated apple fries on a clean plate or baking sheet.
  4. Heat the Oil: Pour about 2-3 inches of neutral frying oil into a large pot or Dutch oven. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350-365°F (175-185°C).
  5. Fry the Apple Fries: Carefully add the coated apple fries to the hot oil in small batches. Fry for 2-3 minutes per batch, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and crispy.
  6. Drain and Season: Remove the fried apple fries from the oil and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Optionally, sprinkle them with a little extra cinnamon sugar while still hot.
  7. Make the Honey Dip: In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup Greek yogurt (or softened cream cheese/sour cream), 1/4 cup honey, and 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth and creamy, adding a pinch of ground cinnamon if desired.
  8. Serve Immediately: Arrange the hot, crispy apple fries on a serving platter and serve alongside your Honey Dip.

Keywords: Ensure each apple fry is fully coated during the dredging process for maximum crispiness. Maintain oil temperature between 350-365°F for the best frying results. If desired, you can bake or air fry the fries for a lighter option.
