Classic Patty Melt: The Ultimate Comfort Food Recipe You Need to Try

Enjoy a delicious Patty Melt featuring juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, and melted cheese, all nestled between crispy rye bread. This comforting dish is perfect for any meal and is sure to satisfy your cravings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese (or American cheese, if preferred)
  • 4 slices of rye bread (or your favorite bread)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: pickles or mustard for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands to ensure even seasoning without overworking the meat.
  2. Divide the beef into four equal portions and shape them into patties, slightly larger than the bread slices to account for shrinkage during cooking.
  3. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and add the thinly sliced onions.
  4. Cook the onions slowly, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes until golden brown and caramelized. Add a splash of water if they start to stick.
  5. Remove the caramelized onions from the skillet and set aside.
  6. Increase the skillet heat to medium-high. Add more butter if needed and place the beef patties in the skillet.
  7. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on one side without moving them to develop a crust.
  8. Flip the patties, place a slice of cheese on each, and cook for another 3-4 minutes until the cheese melts and the patties reach your desired doneness.
  9. Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of rye bread.
  10. Remove the cooked patties from the skillet and let them rest. In the same skillet, place two slices of bread, buttered side down.
  11. Layer each slice of bread with a patty, melted cheese, and a generous portion of caramelized onions.
  12. Top with another slice of bread, buttered side up, and repeat for the second patty melt.
  13. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Carefully flip the assembled patty melts in the skillet, cooking until the bread is golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes.
  14. Flip the sandwiches again and cook for another 3-4 minutes until the other side is golden brown and the cheese is gooey.
  15. Remove the cooked patty melts from the skillet and let them rest for a minute.
  16. Slice each patty melt in half diagonally for presentation and ease of handling.
  17. Serve immediately with pickles or mustard on the side, and enjoy with crispy fries or a simple salad.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, consider adding a dash of garlic powder or onion powder to the beef mixture.
  • For a spicy kick, add sliced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce to the patties.
