Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite brand or homemade)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns (preferably brioche or whole wheat)
  • 1 cup coleslaw (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 cup sliced pickles
  • 1 cup sliced tomatoes
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • Optional: sliced cheese (cheddar or pepper jack)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well to create a marinade. Add chicken breasts, ensuring they are well coated. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or up to 4 hours.
  2. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat about 15 minutes before grilling. For charcoal grills, ensure coals are hot and ashy.
  3. Heat BBQ sauce in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove chicken from marinade and place on the grill. Cook for 6-7 minutes on one side without moving.
  5. Flip chicken, brush with warmed BBQ sauce, and cook for another 6-7 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C). Add cheese during the last minute if desired.
  6. Remove chicken from the grill and let it rest for 5 minutes.
  7. Toast hamburger buns cut-side down on the grill for 1-2 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Place a grilled chicken breast on the bottom half of each bun and drizzle with more BBQ sauce.
  9. Layer coleslaw, sliced pickles, sliced tomatoes, and shredded lettuce. Customize toppings as desired.
  10. Place the top half of the bun over the assembled ingredients and press down gently.
  11. Enjoy fresh off the grill with sides like sweet potato fries or a garden salad.
  12. Garnish with extra pickles or fresh herbs for presentation.

Notes

  • Leftover chicken can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
  • For reheating, use the oven for best texture.
