Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound of ground beef
  • 1 cup of breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • Salt, pepper, and your choice of herbs (about 1 teaspoon each)
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 8 ounces of sliced mushrooms
  • 2 tablespoons of flour
  • 2 cups of beef broth

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and herbs. Mix everything together until just combined.
  3. Using your hands, shape the mixture into meatballs about the size of a golf ball and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Bake the meatballs for 20-25 minutes, or until they are cooked through and browned on the outside.
  5. While the meatballs are baking, prepare the mushroom gravy by melting butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  6. Add sliced mushrooms and cook until softened and browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  7. Stir in flour and cook for another minute, stirring constantly.
  8. Gradually pour in beef broth, whisking to combine. Bring to a simmer and let it thicken for about 5 minutes.
  9. Season with salt, pepper, and fresh herbs to taste.
  10. Once the meatballs are done baking, carefully add them to the skillet with the mushroom gravy and let them simmer together for about 5 minutes.
  11. Serve warm over rice, mashed potatoes, or pasta.

Keywords: Don't overmix the meatball ingredients to keep them tender. You can prepare the meatballs in advance and refrigerate or freeze them for later use. Experiment with flavors by adding grated Parmesan cheese or Worcestershire sauce for added depth.
